About Torey

Torey Zachary (B.Mus., A.R.C.T., L.L.C.M., RMT) began teaching piano lessons over 25 years ago at the local dance school after her Saturday mornings as a ballet accompanist. Now, she teaches many students each week in her Vancouver studio in person and online, from age 5 to almost 80!

Torey’s music education began in the Okanagan, where she studied with composer Ernst Schneider. She is grateful to have studied with other great teachers, including David Vandereyk, Dr. Terence Dawson, and Miranda Wong. A graduate of UBC's School of Music, she also holds an A.R.C.T. in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory, an L.L.C.M. from London College of Music and Media, and a Diploma in Music from Capilano College.

Additional studies include classical and jazz voice, guitar, and Orff methodology. Torey is an active member of the B.C.R.M.T.A. (BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association).

Torey taught group and private piano lessons for 10 years at Capilano University’s Community Music School. There, she collaborated with other instructors to develop the CapPiano group program. During her time at CapU, she also taught in the Kodaly-Orff program. Additionally, Torey has worked with students at Tapestry Music, Prussin Music, West Point Grey Community Centre, West Point Grey School of Music, and Broadway Academy of the Arts.

As a pianist, she has performed at concerts, festivals, and community events in the Okanagan and Vancouver, achieving many awards.

In 2022, Torey created a Practice-a-Thon to raise money for Ukraine relief. Her students raised over $7000, and Torey’s resource was used by the Vancouver Branch of the BCRMTA to help other studios run similar initiatives.

Recently, Torey was invited to speak to piano majors at the UBC School of Music on “The Art and Business of Studio Management”.

In April 2025, she adjudicated the piano division of the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts in Sechelt, B.C.

When not teaching, Torey can be found making pottery at the local ceramics studio.
